Two of the most beautiful things you can put on a watch dial were not made in a factory at all. Mother-of-pearl grows inside a shell; malachite, lapis lazuli, amazonite and tiger eye form in the earth over millions of years. Both give you a dial that is yours alone, because no two pieces are identical. Here is how they differ, how they are made into dials and how to choose between them.
Mother-of-pearl: light in layers
Mother-of-pearl, or nacre, is the iridescent inner layer of certain shells. Its shimmer comes from microscopic layers of aragonite that bend light as it passes through, which is why the colour shifts as you move your wrist. Dial makers cut the nacre into thin discs, polish them and back them so they sit flat and stable in the case.
White and pink mother-of-pearl are the most classic choices and suit smaller women's watches particularly well. Black mother-of-pearl gives a deeper, more dramatic effect. A mosaic dial takes the idea further: small fragments are placed individually, so the surface catches light from many angles at once.
Natural stone: colour from the earth
A natural stone dial is a slice cut from a single piece of mineral, ground thin and polished. Because the slice comes from a different part of the stone every time, each dial has its own pattern.
- Malachite: rich green with concentric bands, formed from copper minerals. Bold and instantly recognisable.
- Lapis lazuli: deep royal blue, often flecked with golden pyrite. Prized since antiquity.
- Amazonite: a soft blue-green feldspar with a gentle, cloudy pattern. Calmer than malachite, lighter than lapis.
- Tiger eye: golden-brown bands with a silky, moving band of light across the surface, an effect called chatoyancy.
How to choose
Look. Mother-of-pearl is soft, luminous and changes with the light. Stone is bolder, with pattern and saturated colour that reads clearly from across a room.
Wear. Mother-of-pearl pairs easily with jewellery and formal outfits, which is why it dominates women's watches. A stone dial is a statement that works best as the centrepiece of an outfit.
Uniqueness. Both are one of a kind, but stone shows it more: the banding on a malachite or tiger eye dial is visibly different from one watch to the next.
Rarity. Valuchi natural stone dials are released as numbered limited editions of 100 to 150 pieces. Mother-of-pearl runs across the regular collection as well as limited editions.

Caring for a natural dial
Both materials are protected by the watch crystal, so day-to-day wear is no different from any other watch. Two habits keep them perfect: avoid hard knocks and drops, since natural materials are less forgiving than printed metal, and keep the watch away from harsh chemicals. Wipe the case with a soft, dry cloth and the dial will look as it did on day one.
