Arabic Numeral Watches: A Buyer's Guide

Arabic numeral watches have become one of the most sought-after dial styles in the Gulf, and for good reason: they combine a familiar script with the craft of a well-made dial. This guide explains what an Arabic numeral watch actually is, what to look for before you buy, and which Valuchi editions are worth considering.

Eastern vs Western Arabic numerals

Most watches in the world use what the industry calls "Arabic numerals": 1, 2, 3 and so on. Technically these are Western Arabic (or Hindu-Arabic) numerals. When people in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait or Bahrain ask for an Arabic dial, they usually mean Eastern Arabic numerals: ٠ ١ ٢ ٣ ٤ ٥ ٦ ٧ ٨ ٩, the forms used in everyday writing across the region.

An Eastern Arabic dial changes the whole character of a watch. The numerals have a flowing, calligraphic rhythm that works beautifully with guilloché patterns, mother-of-pearl and natural stone, and they signal where the watch belongs without saying a word.

Why Arabic dials became a collector's favourite

For decades, Swiss houses produced small runs of Arabic-dial watches specifically for the Middle East, and those pieces are now among the most collectable references they ever made. The appeal is the same today: an Arabic numeral watch is personal, regional and rare, which also makes it one of the most meaningful gifts you can give for Eid, a national day or a graduation.

What to look for

  • Applied or printed numerals. Applied numerals are raised metal pieces fixed to the dial. They catch the light and add depth; printed numerals are flatter and more subtle. Both are legitimate, but applied numerals usually read as more premium.
  • Dial material. Eastern Arabic numerals look their best against a dial with texture: guilloché, mother-of-pearl, mosaic or a natural stone such as tiger eye. A plain dial can look empty by comparison.
  • Legibility. Some numerals (٦ and ٧, for example) need good contrast to read at a glance. Look for hands and numerals that stand out clearly from the dial.
  • Limited numbering. Many Arabic editions are produced in small, individually numbered runs. A numbered caseback adds to the sense of ownership and holds value better.
  • Case size. Arabic dials are available from compact 21mm women's watches to 40mm men's calendar watches. Choose the size for your wrist first, then the dial.
