After years of oversized cases, small watches are back, and women's watches in particular have returned to the proportions that look like jewellery rather than equipment. But "small" covers a lot of ground. A 21mm square watch and a 31mm round watch sit very differently on the wrist. This guide helps you choose.
Start with your wrist
Wrap a soft tape measure, or a piece of string you then measure against a ruler, around your wrist just below the wrist bone. As a rule of thumb:
- Under 15 cm: 21mm to 31mm all work; a 21mm or 24mm case will look especially refined.
- 15 to 17 cm: 24mm to 31mm are the natural range; 21mm reads as a deliberate, delicate choice.
- Over 17 cm: 31mm is the most balanced of the small sizes, and larger cases are also an option.
These are guidelines, not rules. Case shape and bracelet width change how a watch wears as much as the diameter does.
21mm square: the Quadris
The Valuchi Quadris 21mm is the smallest watch in the collection and the closest to a bracelet in feel. The square case sits low and flat, the integrated stainless-steel bracelet flows straight into it, and the dial choices range from mother-of-pearl and Roman numerals to green, black and the Burgundy edition with Eastern Arabic numerals. Choose it if you like your watch to disappear into a stack of bracelets and reappear when you want to tell the time.
24mm oval: the Oval
The Valuchi Oval 24mm is slim, elongated and quietly vintage. An oval case follows the line of the wrist rather than sitting on top of it, which is why it suits narrow wrists so well. Dials are white or pink mother-of-pearl or a champagne sunburst, on polished silver, gold or two-tone bracelets.
31mm round: the Signature
The Valuchi Signature 31mm is the classic: a round case, a clean minimalist dial and an integrated bracelet in silver, rose gold, yellow gold or two-tone. At 31mm it is small by modern standards but has enough presence to be the only piece of jewellery you wear. It is also where you will find most of the women's limited editions.
Bracelet or strap?
All three sizes come on integrated stainless-steel bracelets, which keep the proportions tight and the look dressy. A bracelet also means no strap to replace over the years. If you prefer leather, the 36mm and 40mm Signature models are the ones to look at.
Dial choices
At small sizes the dial does most of the talking. Mother-of-pearl adds light and movement; a coloured dial such as pink, green or burgundy adds personality; Eastern Arabic numerals add character and a sense of place. Frequently asked questions
Will a 21mm watch look too small?
Not if that is the intention. A 21mm Quadris reads as jewellery rather than as a small version of a men's watch. On wrists over 17 cm, the 31mm Signature is the safer choice.
Can the bracelet be adjusted?
Yes. Stainless-steel bracelets are sized by removing links. A jeweller can do this in minutes, or contact us for guidance.
Which size makes the best gift?
If you are unsure of her wrist size, 31mm is the most forgiving. For a very slim wrist, or for someone who loves delicate jewellery, 21mm or 24mm will delight.
